The Euonymus alatus is an evergreen shrub that grows between 15 and 20 feet high. It's shiny dark leaves, that turn bright red in the fall, make it a handsome landscape addition.

Sowing instructions:

Fill a plastic bag with damp, but not wet sand and add the seeds, mixing them around until they are covered by the sand. Close the bag and place it in the vegetable drawer of your refrigerator to chill for three months.

Remove the bag from the refrigerator and spread the seed-sand mixture over a planting tray filled within an inch of the top with equal parts of dampened peat moss, sand and potting soil. Sprinkle an inch of pine needle mulch over the top of the seed layer. Water the tray to settle the seeds and sand in the soil.

Cover the container with a clear plastic bag to keep the environment moist around the seeds and set it in a 75 to 80 degree Fahrenheit place for eight weeks, out of direct sunlight.

Remove the plastic when the seedlings are about an inch high and place the tray under bright lights or sunshine for at least four hours a day.

Transplant the seedlings into larger containers filled with the same planting mixture of equal parts sand, dampened peat moss and potting soil when they are about 6 inches tall.

Move the containers outside after the danger of frost has passed, for a short time each day, increasing the time until they are outside permanently. Plant the new plants in the garden during the summer.
