Common names : Sp: granadilla, granadita, granadilla de China, parchita amarilla, parcha dulce, parcha importada, maracuja-urucu, sweet granadilla, grenadille douce, grenadille de montagne, grenadelle. The Latin name comes from the particularly long, ligulate, petiole nectars.
Passiflora ligularis has it's origin in the Andes from Venezuela to Peru and Bolivia, at 1400-2400 m. Also present in Central America. Naturalized in Jamaica and Haiti.
Sweet Grenadilla is a vigorous woody vine, propagated by seeds. The fruits are very sweet, mostly consumed fresh, more rarely in beverages and desserts, as taste is not strong enough. The fruit has an excellent presentation, and a relatively long shell life. It is a major passion fruit in Colombia, where it is reputed as a healthy baby-food.
Can tolerate some light frost.
Sowing instructions
Sow in trays, pots, etc of good seed compost in a propagator or warm place to maintain an optimum temperature of 70-40-70F . Sowing Depth: žin . Germination can be slow. Seal the seed container after sowing in a polythene bag and place in a temperature of 70F for 3 months. Keep compost moist but not over wet. If germination does not occur by the end of this time, transfer to a fridge (Not freezer) for 3-5 months. At the end of this period return to 70F when germination should occur in around 3 months..
