Lilacs are among the most popular cultivated shrubs in the temperate world. Aside from roses, there is no flower as beautiful and aromatic. There is nothing better than the sweet scent of a freshly picked bouquet of lilacs in early spring. Lilacs are seldom bothered by pests, easy to grow and are renowned for their showy fragrant flowers produced profusely in spring to early summer. All make great specimen plants. Even when the flowers drop, the foliage continues to make the lilac an attractive shrub/tree for the remainder of the growing season. The variety offered here is the large and picturesque Japanese Tree Lilac. This variety grows 20 to 30 feet tall with a spread of 15 to 25 feet forming an oval to rounded-shaped small tree.

Beautiful white flowers are borne in early to mid June in large terminal panicles up to a foot long and up to 10" wide. Its cherry-like bark has a satiny appearance and a reddish-brown color. These respond well to pruning and can be grown as a shrub or small tree, and also make for great flowering bonsai. This is a very showy specimen tree. Hardy to zone 3.

Sowing instructions

Soak seeds in room temperature for 24 hours. Cold stratify for 8 weeks. Then sow 1/4 inch deep in quality gardening soil and place them in room temperature until they germinate (4 days-5 weeks). Keep soil moist. After germination grow seedlings under growlight or on a sunny window. Keep them inside for 3-4 weeks. Transplant them outside in a cold environment after this initial growth period. Alternatively you can directly sow them outside in fall.
